is the earth flat?

*in the distance, you hear never-ending stupidity. whether that’s from me or the people of the flat earth society, you choose*

(oh and this was Jamie’s idea, thanks Jamie)

hOI!

Most SCIENCE! entries I do, I agree with the theory to an extent, but I think this one is downright stupid, and it blows my mind that people still believe this.

Going back to the time of Christopher Columbus, also known as the late 1400s, people believed that the Earth was flat, and that if you were to go a certain distance, you would fall right off the edge and into space.

This theory was disproved, but NOT by Christopher Columbus because he didn’t properly circumnavigate the entire world-he was only trying to find India.

What supposedly changed most people’s minds on the fact that the Earth is flat is, I believe, satellite photos, but the idea that the Earth was round was existent way before Columbus’s time, as shown in Greek librarian Eratosthenes. As listed on futurism.com by Daniel Barker in an article called “How Do We Know That The Earth Is Round?”, “Under the assumption that the Sun’s rays would be parallel as they hit Earth, Eratosthenes measured the angle of the shadows given by pillars in Alexandria and Syene (a town a few hundred miles south on the Nile) on the same day of the year at noon. In Syene, pillars cast no shadow, as the Sun was directly overhead, but in Alexandria, there was a notable shadow.  With the measure of the shadows’ angles, and knowing the distance between Syene and Alexandria, he could measure the circumference of the Earth” (Barker, 1).

Hear that? CIRCUMFERENCE. ROUNDNESS. CIRCLE.

So these are reasons why the Earth is round due to Science:

  1. Satellite photos.
  2. Scientific Research (i.e, Eratosthenes and NASA)

That being said, let’s dive into the beliefs of the Flat Earth Society, a group of people who still believe that the Earth is flat.

  1. Earth appears to be flat when you’re walking, therefore the entire Earth must be just a flat disc.
  2. “Earth is a disc with the Arctic Circle in the center and Antarctica, a 150-foot-tall wall of ice, around the rim” (Wolchover, 1).
  3. Gravity is not real, everything is driven up by dark energy.
  4. Photos of Earth are photoshopped.

Let’s talk about this.

THEORY 1-Earth appears to be flat when you’re walking, therefore the entire Earth must be just a flat disc.

This is only composed of basic observation, not of galactic observation.

THEORY 2-“Earth is a disc with the Arctic Circle in the center and Antarctica, a 150-foot-tall wall of ice, around the rim” (Wolchover, 1).

Natalie Wolchover wrote on LiveScience on an article, “Are Flat-Earthers Being Serious?”, all about flat Earth beliefs. She continues by saying, “NASA employees, they say, guard this ice wall to prevent people from climbing over and falling off the disc”. However, there is no scientific evidence to prove this theory.

THEORY 3-Gravity is not real, everything is driven up by dark energy.

Also written by Natalie Wolchover expanding on the idea that gravity is fake, “Objects do not accelerate downward; instead, the disc of Earth accelerates upward at 32 feet per second squared (9.8 meters per second squared), driven up by a mysterious force called dark energy. Currently, there is disagreement among flat-earthers about whether or not Einstein’s theory of relativity permits Earth to accelerate upward indefinitely without the planet eventually surpassing the speed of light” (Wolchover, 1). Einstein’s theory of relativity is the idea that “all laws of physics are the same for all observers” (Department of Physics, 1).

This isn’t true, as represented by the experiments of Isaac Newton: Gravity is real.

Don’t even get me started on the idea that all Earth photos are photoshopped. ” We’ve seen those planets and many more. Every single one we’ve found so far is round. The Earth could be an exception, true, but that would make it the only non-round planet we’ve ever found, which would be a groundbreaking development. Therefore, a flat Earth becomes highly unlikely just based on what we’ve seen in our universe” stated Scott Satinover in an article titled: “Ask a Scientist: Is the Earth flat?”

This is absurd to me. If for some reason you think the Earth is a flat disc, do comment even though I very highly doubt anybody will, because I think most people here have seen photos from NASA.

Nothing under the Flat Earth Society has logical scientific evidence to back it up: therefore, the Earth is NOT flat.

That’s this post, I hope you enjoyed it.

These posts take a very long time to write and a lot of research, but hopefully it’s interesting to you guys.

Have wonderful lives, biscuits.

  1. yes it is i fellow person who thinks the earth is flat

    1. “Hear that? CIRCUMFERENCE. ROUNDNESS. CIRCLE.”
interesting how you said “circle”, as opposed to “sphere”. listen to your human instinct, child. the earth is flat. like a circle.

    2. “Going back to the time of Christopher Columbus, also known as the late 1400s, people believed that the Earth was flat…”
why mention christopher columbus, but not ferdinand magellan (or at least his crew)?
did you not find any sources on this? and whyyyyy is this? perhaps it’s becAUSE HIS ENTIRE “circumnavigating” trip was a FAKE, and every single history reference is WRONG. SO SAD.

    3. “This isn’t true, as represented by the experiments of Isaac Newton: Gravity is real. ”
um, no, miss, newt did not do any “experiments”, it was only a theory. he just noticed that things are attracted to the ground because of DARK MATTER.

    4. FLATUENCE

((i’m trying to study for my social studies final and crying a lot but hey at least i know ferdinand magellan’s crew was the first to circumnavigate the earth ding dong is that progress i hear apologies if that was a bit annoying))

    1. Woah!!! I had no idea how much bitterness (yes, pun intended) this would spawn. I definitely don’t want to get involved in some great debate about Earth when there are a lot more important things right now. XD

Well, flat earth has some cool points, but the fact that it is possible to fly non-stop around the world pretty much wins the argument. There are other points, mainly summed up in an article link below. Normally I look for more scholarly articles, but I actually thought this was pretty good. I searched for flat earth evidence, and no scholarly articles I found were in favor of it.

So yeah, I think the Earth is round. Please, I don’t want to launch into a gigantic heated debate, and I think both sides have points, but that is my opinion.

  2. I believe in a lot of things of which there is little to no scientific evidence, (ghosts, aliens, God, etc) so who knows? I’m going to go off on a tangent here and say something that’ll probably make you think I’m crazy.

Why does everyone think that aliens are evil beings who want to take over the earth? I’ve never met one personally, but based on the extremely high tech space crafts found in Area 51, I’m pretty sure they’re smart enough and have the right equipment to destroy/take over Earth if they wanted to. #stopbeingalienist
